As the new day began we found ourselves rocking and rolling in a dark ocean, under the stars. The waves were smacking our bow port side of the Windward Spirit with a wind of about 15 knots. We talked of the wonder of skull caps, yes hats.. A skull cap is exactly that, if you try to pull it over your ears it will cover your eyes or you have to roll it up over them. Either way not a great thing, if you need to put a hoody over it it falls in your eyes anyway. I have finally figured out what I need is a cap with an ear flap, yeah that will keep my ears warm. As daylight loomed on the horizon, we reminisced of what went on the fortnight with a view of all the markers and buoys for the shipping lanes entrance to Norfolk V.A. We were very relieved and proud of our night passage. Again Carl had done a wonderful navigation and I was a terrific First mate, we are proving to be a great team on the water. Plus we got our next merit badge for Night Passage. Once we made it into the Elizabeth River in Norfolk we were please to see that they had a schooner sailboat show. We got to enjoy the ships as they sailed by us on their way out. We also got to see all the powerful, large Naval ships that are based here. Yes American we have quite the Naval presents in Virginia and its great to see. On the river we were very surprised when the wind picked up and we were able to set sails, heel over and sail past the Navy, very cool...The further down the river we went we remembered all the places and bridges we had passed on our way north. With the engine running all night and day we had plenty of hot water and finally warm air so I was able to take a shower while we waited for a bridge for an hour.. After we traversed the under the bridge we decided to take the Dismal Swamp waterway to North Carolina since we went the Virgina Cut our last time through and we didn't want to see the same area. Just a few miles up the canal we came to our first Locke and made the last passage though for the day. The Locke tender told us of a dock just up the river, so we stopped for the night. Once docked we took Bella for a walk . Yeah.. shore leave that's all Bella could think of after the long night passage. Carl and I stopped at the Mexican restaurant right on the dock, for a cheap meal and a drink. Then back to the boat for an early night at this point we had been awake for 36 hours.. How you ask.. I had pumped Carl with enough coffee and 5 hour energy drink during the night to keep 2 people awake and I was running on pure adrenalin..In the ditch we knew we would have television so we turned on our favorite show, The Amazing Race and promptly fell asleep. Only to wake up later and go to bed. This morning we woke up with all the hatches open, oh the joy of being farther south.

ReplyDeleteOh how I envy you. Taking the Dismal Swamp route. It was too busy there for our large boat, by the time we had the time to go. I hope you took a lot of pictures. I'm very pleased about your night passage. Way to go sailors!!!
