Another day on the Okeechobee Waterway, and what a day it has been. When we awoke there was not a sole in site, so Carl took his 1st shower on deck. (Boy, did he need that..lol ) He was naked as a jaybird in the open air, I was exercising and watching the view. Not a bad way to start the day. Then as we started to motor and headed down the river, I took my shower. I also was naked on deck. It is a very free feeling to know nobody will see ya and not care if someone does. This was a very desolate area, so no people, no other boats. The funny thing was we have not been able to get tv any place , yet in this area we could get network channels. Go figure...Then the time came to do our second lock, not as easy as the 1st one. The 1st locke master told us not to tie up , since the water was rising. So this time we didn't tie up either since the water would be rising, not a good choice. This locke master opened the gates pretty wide and the water came rushing in, the current was unbelievable, we lost our grip on the lines hanging down and the boat broke lose from the side wall. Thank God there was nobody else in the locke with us. Carl cranked up the motor and put us in gear and got us to the other side where we able to grab the lines. I guess the locke master decided he had enough fun and closed the gates so the water wasn't like a flood any longer. He was a guy about 30 and said to us , "guess next time you will tie up" we could tell he did it on purpose. We continued on. Then the boat started taking on water, NOT GOOD!! Carl emptied the bilge, and began to look for the leak. We had just passed Glades Boat Storage & Repair so we stayed in this area just in case we needed help. Carl found the leak, it was water back flushing in the bilge line, so he took a fishing cork with a line attached and plugged it. That way if we had to remove it quickly we could. Good job Carl!! On down the river we went. After we passed through the 3rd locke ,we were in gator country. Gators were everywhere, so that's where we got a fuel problem. The boat just quit running. My brother Mike was called as he is a diesel mechanic ,and together they got it started. Thanks Mike. It was raining on and off all day was taking longer than expected, we didn't make Slims fish camp, liked we hoped. Oh well, we dropped anchor for the night, Carl tried fishing again and I made dinner. Had to put up all our screens,so the bugs didn't eat us alive. Hope today is a better day. The pictures I took are of the water lillies and the wide river, they are no as pretty as in person.

ReplyDeleteHey Guys: Your blog makes our day. I'm surprised Carl didn't try to wrestle an alligator since his fishing skills seem limited. I've heard it "taste just like chicken." Keep the posts coming and stay safe while having fun.
